The 4th Annual "Friends of St Francis" Charity Golf tournament way held last Friday (Aug. 29) at the Homestead at Wolf Ridge Golf Club in Killaloe. Play began under cloudy skies and a drizzle, but the rain stopped later in the tournament.
This year, proceeds from tournament will go toward the purchase of new bedside privacy screens for patient rooms. The cost of the screens is about $10,000.
Darlene Sernoskie, the hospital’s director of operations, was on hand to demonstrate both the new and the old screens and was able to point out the beneficial features of the new ones.
"The replacement curtains will not only provide much greater privacy for our patients, but are also made of material that will assist with infection control and greater air flow," Sernoskie said.
The crowd of 160 gathered together to enjoy a scrumptious dinner prepared by Andrea Bruderick, and was welcomed on behalf of the SFMH Foundation by Margaret Ogilvie, chair of the foundation board.
Sean Kelly, who was the master of ceremonies for the tournament again this year, said the event has raised more than $27,000 in the past 3 years.
"This year, our tournament went from 9 to 18 holes, increasing the number of golfers from 80 to 144. It's great to see this signature event grow each year,” said Toni Lavigne-Conway, director for the foundation.
“Many of the golfers have returned from year to year because of their desire to support the hospital. This year, we were delighted to welcome new faces to the tournament as more spots became available. We hope they enjoyed it enough to keep coming back again and again."
Lavigne-Conway thanked the many volunteers who made the event a success, making special note of the organizing committee members, Stephanie Murray, Terry Recoskie, Brian Norlock, Grant Dickinson, Margaret Ogilvie and Doug Reeves.
There were lots of skills contests through out the tournament, such as a putting contest won by Dave Lacroix, Molson Raffle ticket draw won by Jim Graham, Heads or Tails game won by Diana Shulist and the best team poker hand, won by the team from the Eganville Leader.
The tournament also featured a silent auction.
Once again this year, proceeds from the Roy Ramstead Memorial Golf Tournament held earlier in the summer were donated to the SFMH Foundation event. And this year, was a donation made on behalf of the 1st Annual Wadsworth Lake Golf Tournament. Mark and Vicki Grys were on hand to present a cheque for $570.
The winning team was Bart Lynch, Mike Lynch, Ryan Leslie and Bruce Sullivan
Although the final tally has not yet been completed, the proceeds from the event are expected to cover the costs of the new bedside screens.
